Employee Incentive Programs - Do They Work?
Posted on January 6, 2009
Filed Under Business Management | Leave a Comment
Incentives are said to be highly motivational influences that push one to achieve higher results. It is no wonder then that many commercial set ups adopt various incentive programs to encourage their employees to perform better thus achieving higher results for the company as a whole. However, the initial question is — do these incentive programs work?
The answer to this lies in the reason for the underperformance of the team. If the team members feel underpaid, then a performance-related pay program (PRP) might work wonders. However, if this is not the case and the team is underperforming due to overexertion, then a PRP will be completely useless while a ‘holiday package’ incentive may work better. So the intensity of the effectiveness of the incentive program will depend largely on the appropriateness of the incentive plan chosen.
There are several types of employee incentive programs and depending upon the aim in mind, an appropriate one may be chosen.
Performance related pay programs are designed to encourage the employee to perform better and achieve higher target resulting in the benefit of taking home an increased pay check. These plans work very well with jobs where the data is statistical in nature. Take for example sales and marketing. For each sale that an employee makes, the company can offer a commission. This runs along the same lines as a PRP. Other incentive programs can be ‘time off’ certificates, which work well for those employees with the highest attendance. Then there are the impressive lunch vouchers for those who like to dine in style and, of course, the all expenses paid holiday package for two for those who enjoy travel. Tickets to the ball game are known to work wonders for those employee teams that are passionate about sports.
While incentive programs are highly varied in nature and also known to be effective if chosen wisely, employee productivity can be improved by keeping a few guidelines in mind.
It is very important to remember that the target being set is achievable. A goal, which is completely impossible, will result in failure no matter how excellent and lucrative the incentive program is.
Another important aspect here is that the working conditions must be conducive to the employees. Find out what motivates the staff. Ask them for their input. An appropriate incentive program will make the team perform better. If the incentives are not appreciated by the employees, it is likely to negatively affect their output.
Remember that incentive programs, over and above providing material benefits to the employee, also act as a win-win status. Take the time to announce the incentives along with expectations and deliverables. Celebrate and announce the employees who meet these milestones!
When a team is not performing well, a thorough analysis should be conducted. One on one discussion with the employees is an integral part of the process, to understand which incentive program will work best. Once a plan has been implemented an established, a regular assessment should be conducted to determine how effective the results, and changes should be implemented on a continuous basis.

How to Decide on a Motivational Speaker
Posted on January 6, 2009
Filed Under Business Management | Leave a Comment
A motivational speaker can actuate a team to perform beyond their normal levels and thus achieve fantastic results. But, while an appropriate speaker will be able to do this magical job with seemingly no effort, another not so suitable one, will miss the target completely. The immediate question that arises then is how to choose a motivational speaker that is most the most suitable for the session.
An important point when selecting a motivational speaker is understanding the difference between the ‘self achiever’ and the ‘text book’ motivational speaker. While the former is known to have put his/her theory to practice and achieved overwhelming tasks, the latter is simply delivering pep talk with impressive phrases like ‘hold yourself no more’. Indeed the self achiever is customarily favored over the textbook speaker, and so an intensive research into the achievements of the motivational speaker is the first step to undertake when selecting a motivational speaker for the team.
It is also relevant that the motivational speaker that you select is suitable and a good match for the audience’s requirements. So while a motivational speaker on weight loss may do well at a gym, he/she may not be able to fare so well at corporate sales driven gatherings, despite being a self motivator. The task at hand is to fully understand what the team needs and then expose them to a motivational speaker who is a guru in this field and has a background to show for it. A motivational speaker, in keeping with the needs of the audience, is essential. Hiring haphazardly would result in minimizing your valuable resources.
When selecting the motivational speaker for a group that is looking to re-evaluate its strengths and weaknesses and their personal situations as well, it will be beneficial to hire a motivational speaker who is a self achiever. However, if the idea is to motivate a team into looking towards a shared vision and other such group dynamics, then it will help to employ a leadership motivator such as a coach of a team, etc.
Once the need of the group, and therefore the type of motivational speaker, has been established, one can locate these speakers from various sources. The internet of course is a vast sea of resources, and it is easy to locate several types of motivational speakers, their contact information, and other pertinent information. The Yellow Pages will help tremendously, and sometimes you will hear of a great speaker through word of mouth. I would recommend that you ask others about good motivational speakers that they have used.
The trick is to hire a motivational speaker who has an interesting method of delivery and is capable of holding the interest of the audience while influencing their performance levels. Based on this and a few other pointers that have been listed above, a motivational speaker for the team should be hired to easily meet and achieve the aims of the group.

Team Building - The First Step of Success
Posted on January 6, 2009

Team building is a term which is common to almost any organization, be it commercial or otherwise. Right from the sports arena to the office complex, team building is considered to be one of the most crucial and important steps in achieving success. However, unless the organization in question is clear about what type of a team is required and how to keep it working in harmony, it is unlikely to make any long-term progress.
Team building has been interpreted in several ways, but in essence it is said to be a combination of the ‘selection’, ‘development’ and ‘motivation’ of the group of people chosen to get the job at hand done in a successful manner. It is said to be one of the most proven methods to develop and strengthen the team’s assets while negating the liabilities.
It is no wonder then that the need for team building is essential to almost all aspects of life. While an office needs to motivate and select its employees in a manner that is most conducive to the task at hand, the home front also needs to adopt team building so as to keep the family together and happy.
There are some who consider team building as a strategy that is adopted only in the initial stages of a venture but this is far from true. Team building is a constant process where the members are continuously integrated and given incentives to perform in harmony towards a common goal.
If it was not for team building, most jobs in the world would not get done. Team building allows one to tap on the potential of a group as opposed to being restricted to the abilities of an individual.
Having established the importance of team building and comprehending its meaning, the next action is to understand the various steps involved in the process. It is necessary that while undertaking the team building process, one clarifies the goals of the team and is able to spread the sense of ownership to each member of the team.
Each team member and the team as a whole are likely to have certain strong points as well as some weaknesses. The trick to developing a strong team is enhancing these strong points and eliminating the weak ones, or at least negating their effect.
Continuously working with the feedback from the team members on both the strong and lacking aspects of the group is a great way to ensure that the team moves forward at all given times. Time and circumstances change constantly, and ignoring these changes while continuing to work with outdated data can cause damage to the team’s goals.
Ignoring team building is known to cause damage to any organization; poor and weak teams will have almost the same effect. So if the goal is to achieve success, then it is imperative that continuous attention be paid to the team building process of the organization.

The Benefits of Acai: Why You Need to Use Acai

People all over county have been taking acai products to reap the various acai health benefits: to lose weight, revitalize their body and feel great in general. The incredible benefits of the tropical fruit known as acai berry has taken the fitness and nutrition landscape over like wildfire.
The primary health benefits of acai are varied and astounding. The small tropical berry contains twice the antioxidants of blueberries, and touts some of the most outstanding nutritional values of any fruit on earth. In addition to acai’s remarkable health, the berry’s benefits include ten times the antioxidant power of grapes, as well as four times the antioxidants of red raspberries.
Acai berries taste a like a cross between a wild raspberry and a grape. The fruit is grape shaped and is about the size of a large blueberry. People that take it are quickly converted to acai lovers because of it’s zesty taste.
In addition to providing substantial weight loss acai has also been shown to contain chemicals capable of preventing heart disease. It has up to 30 times the amount of the cardiovascular-fighting phytochemical called anthocyanin, usually found in red wine. You may have heard of these phytochemicals from the French Paradox, the observation that the French suffer a relatively low incidence of coronary heart disease, despite having a diet relatively rich in saturated fat. The concept bears the phytochemicals in the red wine responsible for their continued health.
Acai berries also have one of the highest ORAC values (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity ), a measurement of antioxidant capacity of food. The best ORAC values usually come in fresh and fruits or vegetable supplements. Due to the benefits and its ORAC value, acai berries have gone up in price in a short time. An alternative is also to use digestible acai powder. The nice thing about freeze dried acai powder is that it will keep a relatively long shelf life without losing its nutritional value.
Acaí berries have been highly valued by Brazilian natives for hundreds of years for their natural ability to provide strength and energy, while also containing large and various nutritional content. Acai berries also possess a unique combination of essential fatty acids, and omega oils.
Acai berry benefits also include a positive benefit in fighting and preventing certain cancers. A recent laboratory study conducted by the University of Florida, states that ingredients in acai berries produced “a self-destruct response in up to 86 percent of leukemia cells tested.”
The Florida study was considered vital in learning acai health benefit from using acai-based beverages beverages, certain frozen acai, dietary supplements and other products made with the berries, according to Stephen Talcott, assistant professor with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. The article containing more information about the potential of Acai berries was published in the U of F’s Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

What to Do When Dash Lights Come On
Posted on January 6, 2009
Filed Under Automotive | Leave a Comment
Paying attention to your car is essential if you want to be able to rely on it for a long period of time. If you ignore any warning signs, you could soon find yourself in very hot water. Of course, it can be difficult to know where to begin when you discover a dash warning light has suddenly come on. Any issues must be addressed right away no matter how large or small they are. If you neglect to assess the situation you could directly cause more harm to come to your vehicle.
The first thing you should do when a light on your dash comes on is to look up that light in your manual. This way you can identify the light and perhaps determine why it is on. Sometimes it may be a minor problem that you can easily fix. But if it is an indicator of a bigger problem then you need to know as soon as possible.
Always double check things like your parking brake and the oil level. If you accidentally tap the parking brake on or drive away without releasing it, your dash light will come on. It may only require a pull of the lever to get you smoothly on your way again. This is yet another reason why paying attention to your car is so important.
There are certain dash lights that you should never ignore no matter what. For example, anything related to your brakes like the ABS light should be assessed by a certified mechanic immediately. To avoid this could seriously endanger you or others. The airbag light is another potentially deadly warning light. If it is on and does not go off, there could be a problem. You do not want the airbags deploying for no reason as you are driving. Get it serviced.
Some cars will tell you the error code that the computer in the car is detecting. Newer cars should all be designed like this so check your manual. If you can get the code and look up what it means, then you can start to figure out if it is something serious and if you can fix it yourself or not. At the very least, if you can give the dealer or mechanic the code, they can get started in helping you out or ordering necessary parts.
You should never ignore a warning light at all. It will not just go away and if it does, that doesn’t mean that there is no longer a problem. Though it truly is an inconvenience, car problems do occur and they must be taken care of before you find yourself stranded on the side of the road.
Check all of your basics like the oil level using the dipstick. You can also check your radiator in case there is an issue that is causing the car to overheat. Sometimes it’s a minor issue like a thermostat needing to be replaced. That tends to be inexpensive and quick to fix. No matter what happens, it’s recommended to get a professional opinion. Serious issues can be hard on the wallet but they can also lead to safety hazards and that just isn’t acceptable.

Automotive Security Systems
Posted on January 6, 2009
Filed Under Automotive | Leave a Comment
When it comes to the security and protection of your car, sometimes there is no such thing as too much. There are various types of automotive security systems out there, each of them possessing their own good qualities and features. Finding the right one for your vehicle protection needs will take some time and research but like buying any product, it is worth it. Never buy the first security system that a salesperson throws at you. It’s a major investment that has to be perfect otherwise it’s just pointless.
The first thing that you must do is establish what type of security you need. A car that is older and has little value may not need the same kind of protection that a fancy new car will need. There is simply no sense paying for something that you don’t want or need. Look into the various types of alarm systems to see what fits for you. Price will play a big part in this too since a higher end system will have more features but will also cost more.
A basic alarm system is the audible type that sets off a loud alarm when the vehicle is tampered with. Sometimes that is all that it takes to scare off a would be thief. This type of system is great for those that just want a little extra protection without all of the additional features available. There are other systems that don’t make any noise at all. Instead they send you a quiet alert like a page or text message. Then you know something is up with your car. If you can’t get to it fast though this may not be a good choice. There are other systems that will immobilize your ignition so that the car itself cannot be stolen. This is quickly becoming a popular choice.
If you prefer, you can get a combination of the three different types of alarm but this can get expensive. That’s why you should always shop around and speak to a number of different alarm system dealers before making a final choice. Not only do you need to consider price but you should also be asking about warranty on parts as well as installation. Get all of this information in writing, including prices quoted to you for different systems.
You must keep in mind that certain things can make your car a target for thieves. If you have a heavily customized ride with fancy tires, rims and other accessories, an alarm system may not be enough. These kinds of cars simply get targeted more because thieves can sell off parts like rims very quickly. If you have a customized car, the safest bet is to keep it in a garage out of sight.
Ask around about certain security products and services before choosing one. Customer reviews are a great way to learn about items that you are unsure of. Word of mouth advertising remains the best form. Do your research and take your time. Security for your car is important and should be done right the first time.

A “survival of the fittest” type of environment so to speak. If a useless online diet or a scam is promoted it is quickly exposed and weeded out by the online community. There are some online diets that are better than others but again that is subject to each individual needs and likes. Is a Corvette better than a Hummer? Teachings of Zen Masters

The teacher plays a vital role in Zen practice, where direct communication is more important than scriptural study. The teacher-disciple relationship is amazing in Zen tradition. The teacher renders all the essential services that make the disciple to live fully. He helps to understand the life of oneness. And he explains to the disciple how each birth is a joyous event and filled with a sense of wonder.
The teacher teaches the Dharma, that means the doctrines and teachings of Lord Buddha. According to Zen beliefs, only a noble disciple can realize the Dharma perfectly. The disciple needs to have enlightened mind to get the ultimate wisdom.
AZen teacher guides the students in meditation, which is the core of Zen practice. He directs the students to perform the rituals flawlessly.
The important role of Zen teacher is to make the student understands the idea of Dharma transmission; this refers to the way in which the teaching is passed from the teacher to the student. The dharma transmission involves awakening the disciple to the true nature. Then the student begins to grow a mystical realization of identity and how to attain Buddhahood.
The teacher gets honorable titles. In Chinese, the title is Fashi, Sunim in Korean, Osho in Japanese and Thay in Vietnamese. He guides the student by providing step-by-step approach.
In Zen, lineage is a system where the teacher certifies the student to teach others. The student then becomes a teacher. It is common for daily chanting in Zen temples to include the lineage. However, modern Zen Buddhists raise criticisms against lineage system.
The Zen teacher teaches the law of karma, which is so powerful and governs the world. He helps the student to take the path of Zen. The disciple can get new perspectives and insights, which ultimately lead to enlightenment.
While the written word regarding Zen practice is often misunderstood by common people, a teacher can clearly specify the meanings and concepts. This emphasizes the importance of Guru in Zen practice where the instructor awakens the thoughts of Buddha in his disciple through meditation.
The techniques and practices require understanding of many suttas and sutras of Buddhist principles. The sutras refer to canonical scriptures, which are the records of the oral teachings of Lord Buddha. Sutta is exclusively used to refer Buddhist scriptures in Pali form.
The role of the teacher is somewhat different in China. He needs to give training in virtue and discipline. The training in wisdom is also essential. It is highly important for a student to find a real teacher who can teach Zen; there are many Zen monasteries all over the world and the students can find a teacher there.
The role of teacher here is vitally important since he alone can enlighten the students in right way. He gives some guidance in Zazen practice, which is a type of Zen sitting meditation. He says some words to create an environment in which the student can be awakened. He can even guide in treating makyo, physical pain, and sleepiness and so on.

What Are the Causes of Stress?
Posted on January 6, 2009
Filed Under Self Help | Leave a Comment
Whatever problem we do have in our life, it is better to know it well. If we try to ignore some problem in our life, the problem will not disappear. It will still be there. Therefore, if we learn about the root cause of every problem, we will be in better position against that problem.
The same logic applies to the stress. Everybody is in situation of stress at some point. Some of us more often, some less, but still, everybody face the stress eventually.
What causes stress? There are many different reasons of causing stress. In general, stress causes are grouped in several areas.
- Work and the workplace problems is the biggest contributor to our stress. This is almost to be expected, since we spend one third of a day at work. Our job demands a certain performance and result from us, with limitation of resources. We are expected to compress maximum outputs within minimal resources. Normally, this demand is making stretching effect on us, which causes stress.
The problem with work stress becomes even bigger at the point when the work starts to penetrate in our life. This happens when we continue to receive business calls although we are at home. Bringing our work at home is cause of stress, since instead of relaxing we are still engaged with work.
Although some people are not working, that does not means that they are stress free. Demand of school or study can also be a cause of stress.
- Money is necessary in or life, since nothing is for free. But here are two problems. First problem lays in the fact that our income is always limited, while our imagination of spending money is literally unlimited. The second problem is that more we earn the more we spend, but when we start to earn less, the spending habits stays. Indeed, it is difficult to cope with all temptation from marketing messages that we recieve.
- Family is frequent cause of stress. Having a family is the obligation that can occupy us beyond our capacity, which is causing stress. Things get worse when family problem is multiplied with money or work problem. You can be under a stress due to the influence of some family member to you. But even if family members do not influence you directly, you are still influenced. If some family member has some major problem, you have it too, until a certain extent.
- Social factors can cause stress. Sometimes, if our pride is hurt we feel stressed. Nobody likes to be ashamed of something. Fighting competition can cause stress. If you envy somebody, you cannot stay calm. Traffic jam or cue can stress you. If you are being discriminated you can feel stressed.
Actually, there are many ways to be stressed. There are many things that cause stress. It would be difficult to avoid all stress situations. But if we learn and understand what causes stress in our life, if we become aware and able to anticipate stress, we will be in better position to face stress. Understanding and knowing the causes of stress can give us ability to anticipate stress. Once we know cause of stress and we get the ability to anticipate stress, we will be prepared to cope with stress and to recover after the stress period.
